Apple Music Relaunches Best of The Week Playlist With New Name

Apple Music has been updating a number of its marquee playlists over the past month, but the biggest came Friday (Aug. 23), as the streaming service rebrands Best of The Week — consistently one of Apple Music’s top 10 playlists — as New Music Daily, which the company is calling its first “premiere global editorial playlist.”

New Music Daily is Apple Music’s vehicle to debut and highlight new music on the platform. The multi-genre playlist will feature 60 songs and Apple Music editors will choose a new song every day to lead New Music Daily, and that artist will be the cover star for the playlist. Normally, New Music Daily will be updated every day with a new lead song and cover star between Monday and Friday, but for the first 30 days the playlist will be updated seven days a week.

“We are differentiating ourselves from our competition by moving at a daily pace,” Rachel Newman, Apple Music’s global senior director of editoria tells Billboard. “This is a global playlist — the concept will be executed around the world — with a global cover star but we’ll be providing local flavor in dozens of territories to provide the best experience for all of our users.”

Taylor Swift is the first cover star for New Music Daily, and the first edition of the playlist features new tracks from Missy Elliott, Miranda Lambert, and 5 Seconds of Summer, among others. Newman says Apple will highlight both established stars as well as emerging and international artists as cover stars for New Music Daily.

The move follows the launch of Rap Life (formerly known as The A-List: Hip-Hop), Apple Music’s new flagship hip-hop playlist, and ALT CTRL (formerly The A-List: Alternative), the leading playlist for alternative music on the streaming service.

Speaking to Billboard last month, Apple Music executives made it clear playlists are a growing focus, and the company has made strides to improve its offerings across the board, culling a number of playlists and hiring popular artists to reimagine what playlist covers should look like over the past year.

“Culture is an always-on experience and we want to reflect that in our programming. When something is new and it matters, we’ll program it in New Music Daily,” Newman says.

New Music Daily is now available on Apple Music.
